Southern-Railroads.org | 3Cs Websites
Southern-Railroads.org is one of three educational/historical/non-commercial websites chronicling the railroads of Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina.
- Southern-Railroads.org focuses on the many railroads making up the Southern Railway, today and yesterday.
- Clinchfield.org chronicles the Clinchfield Railroad.
- Charleston-Cincinnati-Chicago-Clinchfield.com brings to life the 3Cs (predecessor to the Clinchfield) and the other Railroads that crossed the Appalachian Mountains to connect the Ohio River to the Atlantic Ocean. Some failed, while others were great success stories.
Sandhi Kozsuch
A native of Johnson City Tennessee, I’m Sandhi (Sandy) Kozsuch the Researcher, Chronicler, Webmaster, Photographer, Chief Engineer and Train Dispatcher of the 3Cs Websites & Model Railroad.
These websites provide the history and the context, and an online home for that information.
Building on that, the 3Cs model railroad recreates the unfulfilled vision of Johnson City TN becoming an even larger railroad boomtown. The 3Cs, Southern, Clinchfield, and ET&WNC will provide the needed commerce and transportation engine for that vision, as well as a busy-railroad-thoroughfare through the middle of the city.
East Tennessean
Don’t let the spelling of my name throw you, I’m a Tennessee boy still sporting remnants of a southern accent. Other career and train stops throughout my life include Richmond, Charlotte, Princeton NJ/New York City, and now the Atlanta area…..all excellent railroad destinations.
2nd Childhood
After an almost a 50-year career in television and the internet, it was time to enjoy my second childhood just like I did my first one. I spent countless hours watching the Clinchfield, the ET&WNC, and the Southern Railway trains parading through Johnson City. On many days, all I had to do was look out the window, as the railroads were just outside my school. Now, I can relive those great memories and those railroads through this website, pictures, research documents, railfan trips, and on my model railroad.
Bringing Southern, 3Cs, Clinchfield and other Railroads to Life
Fortunately, many people and organizations have collected and preserved a large amount of history on the Southern Railway and the Clinchfield Railroad. This website will add to that solid Southern Railway base.
There is little written or highlighted about the Charleston Cincinnati & Chicago Railroad, and the competing efforts by many individuals, companies, and railroads to cross the Appalachians. The 3Cs was the predecessor of the Clinchfield Railroad by 25 years. This is my perfect opportunity to bring the 3Cs to life through historical research, writing, trekking and hunting for old roadbed, building a model railroad, and creating an online home for that research and information.
Southern-Railroad.org Goals
My goals for this endeavor are simple:
- Preserve and further explore the stories and the history of the Southern Railway and the Railroads that Crossed the Appalachian Region.
- Share the new information and stories I find, and link you to the information that exists
- Honor and highlight the individuals and organizations who have these same goals. and those who have already given so much of their time in decades past
- Share the hobby of model railroading
Southern-Railroad.org Timeline – A Work in Progress
With full retirement beginning January 2023, I’m hoping to have the website in good shape and full of good content within a year. However, I know true completion is years away.
The model railroad will take more time, with at least 5 years to complete all the scenery. Initial running of the trains is only a few months away.
Please come back and visit Southern-Railroads.org and the other 3Cs websites often in the years ahead.
